Dresses and bottoms are also offered in US numeric sizing. If you normally buy numeric, order by this chart rather than converting.

How to measure

Use a soft tape measure over your underwear, not over clothing. Keep the tape level and snug but not tight — you should be able to slide a finger underneath.

Bust. Around the fullest part of your chest, with your arms relaxed at your sides.
Waist. Around your natural waist — the narrowest point, usually about an inch above your navel. Bend sideways and the crease is your natural waist.
Hip. Around the fullest part of your hips and seat, about 8 inches below the natural waist.
Inseam. From the crotch seam of a pair of trousers that fit you well, straight down to the hem.

If you are between sizes

There is no universal answer, so each product page gives a specific instruction. As a general rule:

Rigid fabrics — denim, cotton poplin, linen — size up for comfort.
Stretch fabrics — ponte, jersey, coated twill — take the smaller size; they give with wear.
Outerwear is already cut to layer over a knit. Take your usual size unless you plan to wear a thick sweater underneath.
Knitwear described as oversized is already generous. Sizing up makes it longer as well as wider.
